Update on Barkley

From Barkley's new owners:


Just wanted to write and let you know how everything is going with Barkley.

From the day we brought him home two Saturdays ago it was like he had always been part of the family. He is such a loving, attentive and smart dog. Within the first week he was already house broken, sleeping on the mat next to our beds and going into his crate no problem.

We still need to work on the barking and jumping but it's already calmed down some and most of it is probably just due to youthful exuberance.

Attached are some pictures of Barkley's new everyday life.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for taking such good care of Barkley and bringing him into our lives. He is a most wonderful dog!!!

Friday review, Mar. 5

A bunch of black Labs/mixes were brought up from high kill shelters in the States last week. I'm always amazed at the quality of dogs that come up from the States. Their personalities are always so pleasant. I guess that speaks to the number of dogs that are killed down there and how we get the cream of the crop through rescue.

Oops, my mistake. I thought these guys were from the States (that's usually where a lot of TAS South black Labs come from) but turns out they're from Quebec.

Brand spanking new and some with no names yet.

Toronto Animal Services South also got in dogs from Quebec last week (the facility is pretty buzzing right now). Check out the Corgi mix with the dangerous ears.

Barkley, the hairy eyeballed Maltese Terrier got groomed so I took a new photo. I hear he's had his eye operation done so I'll need to take an even newer photo with his now hairless eye - hopefully get around to it this weekend. He'll be put into adoption once the eye is completely healed and will probably be snatched up pretty quick since he's such a cutie pie. That's a good thing because the shelter environment is degrading his personality with other dogs.

Hairy eyeball

I never did quite understand that expression about giving someone the hairy eyeball and I probably never would have except that I met this ragamuffin, Barkley, yesterday and lo and behold, he had a hairy eyeball.


Seriously, he's got a hairy eyeball. Look closely in the photo below. His left eye is partially covered by hair. There's hair growing out of his eyeball.


It doesn't seem to bother Barkley but then it's hard to say what will happen to the eye as he gets older. There's a chance TAS might get the whole eye removed but no decisions have been made yet.

So, anyway, I looked up the expression about giving someone a hairy eyeball and it means to stare at someone, usually with disdain. I don't think this flopsy guy has a drop of disdain in his whole body. He does like to give people the hairy eyeball, though.

Super models

Sometimes I spend quite a while with a dog, taking several dozen shots of it and even then have a hard time choosing one image which I think portrays it clearly and in a good light. Then other times, for whatever reason, the dogs are like professional models and they shine through in every image.

Malachi, a Maltese Terrier, whom I had mistaken for a Chinese Crested when I first glanced at him, is one such dog. It's not just that he's got a rather outrageous hair cut, style and colour, especially for a Maltese, but his personality also has a natural star quality to it. This is one dog Paris Hilton would be lucky to get in her purse.





Parker's photo was already up in yesterday's post but I want to show you some of his other shots. This guy really doesn't stop smiling and it's a smile coming from a dog that means it. He's gregarious, has a big personality and is a real delight to hang out with.
