Bentley - Beagle

Bentley - Beagle

I was walking some dogs at Toronto Animal Services South this afternoon when I saw another dog walker standing by some bushes. She was holding one end of a leash and the other end disappeared into the scrub. I walked over and moved aside some branches and peaked in and saw a Beagle in there, hiding. He didn't want to come out. He was fine where he was.

Bentley is originally from Ohio. He was wandering around in Wayne National Forest when he was captured in a live trap by a hoarder. From the hoarder, he was brought into a rescue the summer of 2009. There, people passed him by for months until it was arranged to send him to TAS South last week to see if he'll have better luck up here in Toronto.

Bentley is a very shy dog around people but he loves dogs. He's learning from other dogs that being around people isn't such a scary thing but there's still work to be done. You can tell, though, that he's going to be a superb dog one day with the right owner. He's not one of those growly shy dogs. He's just shy. Go slow with him and soon enough he'll be nuzzling you for more ear rubs.

Spot - Beagle mix

This is Spot, a very distinguished looking dog (may be adopted already). His ears are like flags getting blown around in the wind.

Friday review, Feb. 5

Toronto Animal Services South seems to have be getting in dog breeds in waves these last few weeks. Recently, it's been Huskies and I've already gotten some of their names mixed up. This one below is Kibosh (I mistakenly called another Husky Kibosh a couple of weeks ago) and he's a bright, young fellow perfect for bike joring or just lounging around.

Kibosh

Benny's an affectionate little Beagle but he can be a bit of a howler when there are other dogs around and he's wanting their attention.

Friday review, Jan. 22

Lots of new dogs this week.

Sheba

Ramone is a super nice black Labrador Retriever who seems to have been abused in the past. He's extremely sensitive to hands being raised and immediately backs away and cowers and then looks for reassurance. I hear, though, that he's going to end up in a fantastic new home so I hope whatever bad memories still haunt him will soon fade away.

Ramone

These next three Labs are happy dogs without a care and the two black ones especially are really robust and beautiful examples of the breed.

Dickie

Buddy

Boone

Bobby

Ida is a serene and elegant Husky. She's got a sense of royalty about her. I love her white mask.

Friday review, Dec. 18

There are some great dogs at TAS South this week starting with this chubbo West Highland Terrier who wants to make a career out of lap sitting.

Here are three more Shih Tzus who have come in from puppy mills. They are a little overwhelmed by the outside world still because until a couple of weeks ago they knew nothing except the inside of a cage. They're coming around, though, and it's great to see when their curiosity overcomes their anxiety and they start to explore.

These two super friendly Beagle siblings were recently found wandering the streets of Toronto dumped by owners who don't get the meaning of Christmas.

Friday review, Dec. 11

After the hundreds of dogs at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary and then the plight of the dogs at the Toronto Humanes Society, it's kind of nice to just be back at Toronto Animal Services to walk a few dogs and take their photos. I only managed two photos this week as it's been busy.

Here's Deacon's photo but I look on the TAS adoption site and he's not there so I'm thinking he's already been adopted. Good for him.

Deacon

Luv this guy's ears.

Toronto Animal Services Friday review, Oct. 16

I guess TAS South is trying to make up for the downtime over the summer with respect to dog rescues/adoptions so with all the new dogs coming in, the place is getting quite full and busy. Some of these guys don't even have names yet - or I just haven't managed to track them down.

Ciara, a Whippet mix? Well, that's what her kennel card says anyway.

Sometimes I need an editor

Dakota, a Beagle, and Butch and Angel, a couple of bonded Miniature Pinschers, have not been adopted yet and I think part of the reason is that the photos I originally took of them rather suck. So, a couple of days ago I took them out for a reshoot and I'm thinking the results are better.

This is the original Dakota photo:

Nyeh

I don't know what I was thinking letting that one get used. It's really not a very flattering shot at all.

Here are a couple of new ones. The first one will be the new TAS adoption website photo. The second one may be used as an additional photo on the TAS Petfinder site:

I hope the new photos bring some more interest for Dakota. She's way too good a dog to still be in adoption.

The original photo for Butch and Angel don't do them any favours:

This new one puts them in a better light, I think, showing them off to be the cuddlebugs they are:

I wish the main TAS adoption website could handle multiple images because these two funny faces really need a bunch of photos to reveal the full range of their personalities:

Angel is definitely the more take charge of the two:

Whereas Butch is, well, see for yourself:

It would be nice to be able to upload videos as well so that potential adopters can be shown what to expect when they show up. One of the problems Butch and Angel have is their lousy cage presentation. They act like a couple of little wingnuts when they first see someone:

But really, they're just starved for attention and as soon as they get some, they chill right out:

Problem is, most people don't get beyond the initial barking. These two really are a lovely pair together.

Sad news on Angel here.

Toronto Animal Services Friday Review, Sept 18

Luna

Luna is a Doberman crossed with a laughing Hyena by the looks of her. She's whip smart and wants to be buddies with everyone but she's got a wild streak in her which will have to be properly tempered by an experienced owner.

Fidel

Fidel, a Field Spaniel, is my childhood ideal of a dog's dog. Goofy, furry, fun and full of energy. He loves ducks but I don't think ducks love him.

Emmy

Is Emmy a Pug? A Puggle? An Pugnificent accident? I don't know. All I know is that when you see her face, you're going to want to squeeze it.

Dakota

Dakota is a sorta Beagle, very well mannered and friendly and gets along with other dogs no problem.

Brutus

Brutus is a quasi German Shepherd. He's in his long, gangly stage with loping limbs but his face is still very much puppy and he's very affectionate. There's a long scar across the top of his muzzle, the result of a too tight head harness perhaps.

Rhonda

Rhonda is a way too skinny Rottweiler. She's wonderful around people but likes little critters a bit too much if you know what I mean.

This batch of dogs rescued from Montreal and transported to Toronto by:

Toronto Animal Services Friday review, Aug 21

This German Shepherd pup is super smart and also very high energy. He knows his "sit" command well enough but sitting still is definitely not what he wants to be doing right now.

Major's already been in a shelter for 4 months in Montreal. He's a relaxed older dog and hopefully won't be spending much more time in his kennel at Toronto Animal Services.

Update: Not even one day in adoption and Major's already been adopted! Hurray for Major.

Isis is a very friendly but submissive (to other dogs) Jack Russel Terrier. Outdoors, she's a doll, but unfortunately, she barks like a banshee in her kennel when she's trying to get someone's attention so she may not be suitable for an apartment.

Isabelle, a Beagle mix, is becoming more secure in her new environment. She was a bit shell shocked when she arrived at TAS after her previous owner died.

Farley is a very playful and affectionate young Border Collie mix. He needs some serious exercise, ideally off-leash and with other dogs. He was trying to get Isis to play with him but she found him a bit too big and energetic.

This pup Corgi, Ruddy, was a stray. His 7 day holding period is up so now he's up for adoption. Blink and he'll be gone.

Update: He's gone.
