Toronto Animal Services Friday review, March 27

I think on Fridays I'm going to start posting up photos of new dogs who have come into Toronto Animal Services South the past week. With all the rescue TAS is doing these days, a lot more dogs are available and I'm thinking the additional publicity can only help. These pooches are either already up for adoption or will be shortly.

Some of the photos have accompanying descriptions and some don't. That's not because the ones without have got no personalities but because I can only write fun, friendly, happy, etc. so many times before those words lose all meaning.

If you know anyone who's interested in adopting one of these guys, just contact Toronto Animal Services South at 416 338 6668 or go to their website.

You can also e-mail me and I might be able to give you some additional information before you go check them out.

Sira is fascinated by birds and I've never seen a dog actually point before but she certainly knows how it's done.

Scratch

McTavish may look like he's got Scottish ancestry but it's all in the haircut. He's actually a Lhasa Apso but came in with thick fur so dirty and matted that the groomer decided to give him buzz cut.

Gigi

Chanel is a puppy mill dog who is a fab dog. Since she's spent most of life inside, and likely inside a cage, she's still very curious about the outside world and is a little anxious around loud noises. Otherwise, she's a wonderfully affectionate dog and great on a leash.

Update on Gigi here.

Boxer delivery

This Boxer just got off the van from Montreal to Toronto Animal Services. It's spent most of its life inside a puppy mill cage. Its white furred feet are dingy yellow from living in its own filth for so long. It's not quite sure what to make of the outside world. Noise, people, scents.Mostly, it just watches at first. Sometimes, it wants to run back into the security of a cage. Even the ground beneath its feet must feel strange. No more rusty metal mesh.

It becomes wary of the camera so I put it away after a couple of minutes. And then, what amazes me is that it starts to bond. It comes to me for reassurances. It tries to hide behind me when there is a loud noise. It starts to take comfort in pets and scratches.

This must be innate. How could it have possibly learned this from within a cage? Who would have set the example? Even after only experiencing some of the worst humanity has to offer, it still wants to trust us. We can't let it down again.

Update on Miller

From Miller's new parents:

Just wanted to send you a quick update on Miller. He is the most perfect, wonderful boy ever! He spent the drive home curled up on my lap in the back seat the entire way, and was very happy to play more with Mya once we got home. He certainly doesn't like the snow or ice much - which we still have quite a lot of here! He spent the entire night cuddled up against Joe and wouldn't move, even when I got up to let Mya out in the night. And no accidents in the house at all! Miller is very obedient and so eager to please - and a total lap dog - couches, chairs, floor, wherever one of us sits, he climbs on a lap. He's the perfect addition to our family, and we are so very happy with him. Though it was a little tough working this morning, as he wanted to sit with me on the rolling office chair!

Thank you so much for making our trip to the Humane Society great - we both enjoyed meeting and talking to you very much, and felt good about the entire process.
Take care.

They got the Humane Society bit wrong, way wrong, but I suppose they can be forgiven for that, this time.

's wonderful

They came in fast and furious last week and while I haven't had a chance to meet every last one of them, these guys and gals I did meet and they are wonderful each and every one. All have good people skills and are pretty dog friendly and as far as I could tell, seem housebroken (but you'll have to check on that). This is going to be the best graduating class yet.

Matchmaker

Look who got himself a girlfriend! Miller, a handsome, young Boxer, came in a few days ago not too sure about what he had gotten himself into but now it looks like everything's turning up roses for this guy.

Yesterday afternoon, he was introduced to a new family who have a female boxer and I heard that at first he wasn't exactly thrilled with the new dog until he clued in she was a girl and then suddenly it was like all Barry White and whispers of sweet nothing.

Don't talk to me

You sexy thang

Miller may be a playa but he ain't got no equipment left so playing's all he's going to be able to do - which I'm sure will be just fine with his new mom and dad.

Next year, I wanna be the mascot

Usually when I go visit the dogs at TAS on the weekends, it's pretty quiet but not today because it's Caribana weekend, one of the biggest party festivals in Toronto, and the crowds were out along with the noise that 1,000,000 revellers tend to make. Some of the dogs were okay with the noise, others not so much.

A yet unnamed dog, simply called Husky for the time being, didn't seem to mind the noise at all. In fact he was on a mission to check it out. We walked towards the crowds milling around the main parade and Husky was flashing his peepers at everyone and making friends all along the way.

"Oh, look at his beautiful eyes."

"Ohmygawd, his eyes are gorgeous."

"Mommy, look at that dog. It looks like it has ghost eyes."

"Wow, his eyes. Is he friendly?"

Of course, the only thing I was thinking was please please please don't take a dump here. Luckily, he was too busy conversing with his boyz to be thinking about that.

I think it was Husky's intention to actually join in with the parade but I explained to him that we had missed the application deadline so maybe next year. He was disappointed but agreed to let me take his picture anyway.

Husky

These two weren't as taken by the crowds and so I did their photos quickly and brought them back inside.
