Spotted blue tongues

There's been a influx of dogs with spotted blue tongues this past week. I always thought that a whole or partial blue tongue meant a dog has some Chow Chow or Sharpei in it but apparently that's not always the case. Some breeds, including Labs, sometimes just show up with spotted blue tongues all on their own. Either that or they've been licking too many blue flavoured slushies (what flavour is that anyway?).

Retriever Danny has got abundant energy and will need lots of exercise as well as some training. He's a pretty attentive dog, though, so the training shouldn't be too difficult.

Hendrix, the Collie mix below, is one of those popular dogs whose photo I take and before it even gets put up on the site, he's already adopted.

Well, Red at least looks kind of like a Chow Chow. Some Chows can be indifferent to strangers but this one is quite friendly though not in any pushy sort of way. He waits politely for you to make the first move before he comes in for more attention.

Toronto Animal Services Friday review, Oct. 9

Dawson

Dawson is a Rottweiler/German Shepherd mix and he's a splendid young dog. I'm not sure how old he is but he's still got a puppy look and puppy moves. He's one of those dogs who approaches people with big butt wags while lowering himself in preparation for the possibility of a tummy scratch.

Deuce

Deuce, an older Collie, is a great people dog and will bond quickly with a human companion but doesn't much like other dogs. That's fine. At his age, I'm sure he'd prefer to just go on calm walks with his owner over rough housing at the dog park.

Roxy

Roxy is a Boston Terrier and will be gone in 5 seconds when she hits the adoption floor.

Toronto Animal Services Friday Review, June 5

Muppet

Sally just wants to hang out with you. She really really really really does.

Lucy's a bit more laid back, built for comfort, not speed.

Lucy

Alpine really really really really wants to hang out with you too, maybe as much as Sally.

Alpine

Why is this Newf named Bumble Bee? I don't know, but he is. I guess whoever takes him home can talk to him about it.

Bumble Bee

Rosie here is a pretty relaxed Rottweiler. She's got a bit of a big belly but that only adds to her charm.

Toronto Animal Services Friday Review, May 29 - a few more

Just got these three guys done this afternoon. The day had started out cloudy and kind of chilly and suddenly the sun came out and the dogs were panting away. Sometimes I can't figure out how they get all that tongue back inside their mouths.

Mickey

Yogi

These two furry guys came in earlier in the week, both bigger boys with great personalities.

Clancy's a friendly, eager fellow and he's sure to make lots of friends when people walk over to check out his brilliant brindled coat.

Clancy

For a husky, Olga has got excellent leash manners. Very polite and definitely a softie.

Toronto Animal Services Friday review, April 24

These first two guys came into Toronto Animal Services South as strays a while ago and their owners haven't shown up to collect them so any day now, they're going to go up for adoption. Someone's already expressed interest in Boomer, the American Bulldog, and you can bet the gentle, brindle Collie mix will have lots of fans as well as soon as it hits the adoption room.

The next two are both Corgis. Well, the first, Susie, is a Corgi mix and may look like a pup but is actually full grown. It's terribly cute with its ferocious brindle coat and big owl eyes.

The "original" Corgi below does look kind of regal though I'm pretty sure it that if given a choice between living with royalty or living with someone who smelled like bacon, it would pick the bacon guy.

And finally, an always popular, very friendly black Lab.

Reserve dogs

Toronto Animal Services South is helping out with some of the unwanted stray dogs from one of the reserves up north. The working partnership has been pretty successful so far, and last week, four more were transported down and are being put up for adoption. Actually, I think one or two of them may already be taken - yes, I've been slow this week with my posts. It's no surprise, though, because these dogs are super friendly and pretty leash obedient for untrained dogs.

All four are pretty much housebroken. That seems to be one good thing with dogs that have lived most of their lives outdoors: they don't do their business inside the house.

The Border Collie cross was actually considered feral and had to be trapped but now it sure seems to love being around people. I think it's discovered that we're a good source for food and ear scratches.

I think this black Lab was crossed with a bear with its big bowling ball head and tree trunk limbs. Thick coated and affectionate, he'd be good for keeping someone warm on a cold winter's night.

This one's got a really unique look, like a brindled German Shepherd/Collie(?). Also, very friendly and a very good leash walker. He kept checking back on me and barely pulled at all.

This German Shepherd cross was the shyest of the bunch but not in any unfriendly way - just a tiny bit unsure of new people but very quick to warm up and then very happy to meet you.

Update on Gigi

I remember the first time I saw Gigi, she'd just come back from the groomer's and her coat was glossy black. I figured she wasn't going to stay too long at TAS and sure enough, she was one of the first dogs adopted from her group that came in that week.

From Gigi's (now Brooklyn's) owners:

Hello,

She is doing very well and we are getting to know each other better.
We are planning to enroll her in obedience school in a few weeks as
well. We have attached a few of her pictures to this email. We look
forward to hearing back from you soon.

Toronto Animal Services Friday review, March 27

I think on Fridays I'm going to start posting up photos of new dogs who have come into Toronto Animal Services South the past week. With all the rescue TAS is doing these days, a lot more dogs are available and I'm thinking the additional publicity can only help. These pooches are either already up for adoption or will be shortly.

Some of the photos have accompanying descriptions and some don't. That's not because the ones without have got no personalities but because I can only write fun, friendly, happy, etc. so many times before those words lose all meaning.

If you know anyone who's interested in adopting one of these guys, just contact Toronto Animal Services South at 416 338 6668 or go to their website.

You can also e-mail me and I might be able to give you some additional information before you go check them out.

Sira is fascinated by birds and I've never seen a dog actually point before but she certainly knows how it's done.

Scratch

McTavish may look like he's got Scottish ancestry but it's all in the haircut. He's actually a Lhasa Apso but came in with thick fur so dirty and matted that the groomer decided to give him buzz cut.

Gigi

Chanel is a puppy mill dog who is a fab dog. Since she's spent most of life inside, and likely inside a cage, she's still very curious about the outside world and is a little anxious around loud noises. Otherwise, she's a wonderfully affectionate dog and great on a leash.

Sunday photos

It was a busy Sunday afternoon. There were lots of new dogs and luckily there were lots of volunteers too so all the dogs got properly walked. They all needed photos as well and I only got about half of them done before the light outside started fading. Here's the first batch.

It's pretty obvious this adorable Yorkie isn't going to be in adoption for long.

This older Lab cross is wondering why it's not at home.

Two magnificent red Dobermans came in on Saturday. This is the male. He's really playful and is super eager when meeting new people.

This is the female. I think she might be the previous one's sister but I'm just guessing. She's more timid than the male but very friendly once she gets to know you. She's got really raspy breathing so hopefully the vet can figure out what's going on with her and get her fixed up.

This Collie is a bit rambunctious but settles right down as soon as someone gives him affection.

This little Westie loves to get up on its hind legs and clap. Another little one who isn't going to be in adoption long.

I had a hard time getting this shy Poodle to come out of its crate which it was hiding in inside its kennel but eventually it made its way out. I picked it up and put it on the bench and then it nuzzled right in beside me and didn't want to move.
