Phoenix finds a home

From Humane Society of Durham Region:

Phoenix is now stable enough to be placed into a foster home, we have chosen a really wonderful foster home for him and he will go home Wednesday, Sept 9, 3009!

The foster parents are prepared to care for him until the end at which point with consultations with the foster home and veterinarians who are treating him will make the decision when it is the right time.

There is nothing more noble than giving a terminally ill dog a home. The financial costs may be high but more significantly, giving one's heart over to a life so fleeting must surely be the essence of charity.

Thanks to all the people who have taken in these battered, sick or old dogs who otherwise would never have experienced being welcomed into the arms of a good family and who never would have known a day of kindness. There may be no such thing as a good death but at least through the grace of these good people, these dogs are given a few moments of a good life.

I remember that little snatch of TV footage last week showing Phoenix checking out grass and sunshine. Priceless.

I have tears of joy and sadness . God Bless the folks that see past the evil in the world and take on such a precious gift even for a short time. Phoenix will feel the continued love until his time comes.
I`d like to see that vid. too redstar.

thank goodness he will have somewhere safe to spend his last days. This story is truly heartbreaking, but at least he will know a little kindness.

Just a quick note - foster parents don't typically HAVE to take on the financial burden of an ailing dog. They can go above and beyond and take him to their vet if the group they are fostering for don't want to spend the money on him (like my friend just recently did, spending $1800 on an ill cat who needed emergency care), but they don't have to.

The Phoenix coverage was a short clip on OMNI TV news a week or so ago. I had a quick look through the Cantonese news segments on their website but did not see it.

The footage was ground-level. It was a perfect sunny day, and Phoenix was checking out the lawn at Durham Humane. He looked like any well-loved pet enjoying a summer day in the backyard.

Myself and my family applied to be Phoenix's foster family, along with hundreds of other people who had followed his story from the start. We were on the short-list, but because we're in Stratford, and too far away for the Durham Humane Society people to travel to easily for the weekly check-ins, we didn't make the final cut. As much as we're sad that we didn't get the chance to give him a home, we're thrilled that he has a good place and people who will give him the love and care he'd been denied until now. I know there will be no miracles for Phoenix, and that makes me sad and angry, but at least he'll have some really good months to hopefully make some attempt to make up for the life he led before.
Fight the good fight, Phoenix. We're still with you in spirit.
S.

Sad to hear the prognosis but happy that Phoenix will have a home and people who will love him for however long he has.

Update on him and new pix at Durham Humane and here (in grass and sunshine):

He loves the cats, and especially their catfood!

Man, I'd truck in a load of Fancy Feast for Phoenix any time.

This comment on Durham Humane's Facebook site cracked me up. When he went to his new foster home...

"he was feeling good enough to start humping people.

...he had marked every blade of grass in the yard before proceeding to have a nap on the bed with one of the foster parents"
