Get a dog by Ben Stein

Watch CBS Videos Online

Nice sentiment but I'm not sure advising unemployed people to go out and get a dog is such great advice if money is going to be a concern. Volunteering at the local shelter, on the other hand ...

I heard this on the radio yesterday and I thought the same thing - if they are unemployed, they may not really have the money for a dog. But hey, what do I know, eh?

There are so many dogs out here that are already vetted. And need homes. I think Ben is right on with this one. A dog can make the sun shine even when its raining. Just because someone has no job, doesn`t mean they wont be good dog parent. We have to quit looking at everything from the money angle if we are to stop the senseless killing in pounds. People want dogs. Dogs need homes. As I`ve said before, all of the dogs in so called shelters had homes once , aside from the mill pups and dogs.
They deserve a second look. If someone has no job, do shelters turn them away?

Heather, if I was jobless, I'd still have dogs but I think it's something that needs consideration. You're right, though. A dog in a poor house with a caring owner is better than a dog in a kennel.

Having a dog isn't necessarily cheap, but it is one of the most cost effective things you can do to improve the quality of your life.

Even with the cost of good quality food and vet care and other expenses, it's dirt cheap when you figure in all of the happiness and contentment and entertainment you get every day from a good relationship with a dog.

Imagine how much money you'd have to spend on crack and Valium and hookers and stuff to replicate that.

The only caveat is that this only works for people who already love dogs. Some people just don't get it. Those of us who do are lucky.

Lisa, I can't tell you the amount of savings I've accrued because I'm no longer making twice nightly purchases from the person at the corner. I'm also sleeping much better, my skin's cleared up and most of my teeth have finally grown back. Most of them. There are still a couple of empty sockets but I just stick a couple of Chiclets in there and everything's good.
