Smiley just wants to make friends so whenever someone walks up to his kennel, he jumps up and he "smiles". I know it looks more like a weird snarl but it's not at all an indication of aggression.
It's a funny little expression and I hope it doesn't scare off any potential adopters. I'm sure when he gets to the adoption floor, there'll be a big sign explaining his "smile".
He never does it outside the kennel so it must have something to do with the barrier.

It would be so easy to concoct a "vicious" dog story just using those first few photographs.
We used to have a Doberman that greeted everyone with that type of "smile".
With that Breed,we spent a lot of time explaining her special "smile".
I`m sure this fella above will find someone who understands.
Apparently there is something called a "submissive grin" where the dog curls his lips and bears a large display of teeth. That in itself may look threatening, but when combined with other extreme non-threatening body posturing such as a dipped head, slouching body, squinting eyes, and lowered tail is a display of extreme respect and submission. I swear my paps grin...sometimes, especially in the dead of winter when I am getting up at 5 a.m. to go to work to buy their toys, food, vet care, etc. I swear they are doing more than grinning...I think they are actually laughing...AT ME!!!
That beaut won't last long as all.
Bright shiny teeth! He must want to show off all the hard work that went into brushing those pearly white snappers.
I LOVE smiling dogs! It can be startling at first but the body language is always so friendly there is no doubt as to the dog's intentions.
The first photo looked almost like what one of my Danes does sometimes in a crate or X-pen - he pushes his nose up against the bars until his front teeth and gums are showing. He'll stand there like that for a long time, and we all laugh at him.
My miniature pinscher has a similar toothy grin that is his smile--it's far different from his ugly face! He does it when we come home, or on the verbal cue of "Hey!" if you bribe him with a biscuit.
Smiley is a gorgeous boy--love that caramel-cream coat!
I thought he was a she lol. Either way very cute dog, although, I must admit I was a bit intimidated at first with the "smile" Dog is cute cute cute! Very energetic and fun, would make a great agility dog
